Audition Prep Sheet for "Smile," A Musical by Howard Ashman and Marvin Hamlisch
What To Expect
First, we are asking that you sing specific song cuts from the show. Don't try to find a copy of the soundtrack, we hear there was never an official one recorded. The song shorts we would like you to perform are linked at right. Pick the song that most suits your range, we will consider you for all roles regardless of the song choice.
We are looking for character. It always helps to understand your character and portray it properly if you know where it sits within the play and what the character's motivation is. We suggest you read the script of the show in its entirety if possible.
The song cuts are short, so we suggest you have them as memorized as possible. It is much easier to show character if there is no paper in your hands. Your focus can be on your performance and its effect on the audience instead of looking down at what is in your hands. If memorization is not possible, we understand as well.
There may be some cold reads at the auditions. Cold reads are unprepared scenes from the script. Again, to be most prepared for these, you may want to be familiar with the script and characters (along with their motivations).
If you signed up for our program, you are absolutely in the cast. The auditions are for consideration for principal/lead roles. (If you haven't signed up, do so as soon as possible to secure your spot. Download the Registration form and bring (or mail) it to the ACMA main office.
As of May 25, we still have spots left in the program. Spread the word! We are very excited to put on a magnificent show.
